The World 1986

For more than four decades, Europe has lived beneath the shadow of a war that never came. To the West stands NATO. To the East, the Warsaw Pact. Thousands of tanks, aircraft and soldiers remain deployed on both sides of the Iron Curtain, prepared for a conflict everyone believes would be catastrophic. October 1986. A major Warsaw Pact exercise is underway in Czechoslovakia. Officially, the troop movements are routine. NATO intelligence believes otherwise. Reconnaissance reports unusual concentrations of forces near the West German border. Armored formations have moved forward, fuel and ammunition are being transferred toward staging areas, and military communications have increased sharply.

 

 

Intercept:Broken Gate

At 22:40 hours, NATO intelligence intercepts encrypted transmissions originating from military headquarters inside Czechoslovakia. Their contents cannot be fully decoded. One phrase appears repeatedly: BROKEN GATE. Less than thirty minutes later, several Warsaw Pact communication networks suddenly go silent.

 

 

The Night Before the War

American commanders fear the exercise may be transforming into preparations for an actual offensive. Washington authorizes a limited covert operation. Small American Special Operations teams will cross the Czechoslovak border during the night. Their mission is to disrupt critical military infrastructure, gather intelligence, recover prisoners, interfere with supply movements and weaken the forces assembling near the frontier. What NATO does not know is that Czechoslovak commanders have reached almost exactly the same conclusion. Their own special units receive orders to cross secretly into West Germany. During the night, soldiers from both sides move through the forests of the border region. Neither side knows the other has already crossed. Officially, Europe remains at peace.

 

 

Situation

No declaration of war. No front line. Two covert forces are already operating behind enemy lines. A sentry, a gunshot or a radio transmission may be enough to ignite the crisis.

 

Shadows Across the Border

Under cover of darkness, American and Czechoslovak special operations forces cross the border simultaneously. Each side has five scoring objectives: destroy the Radar Station and Fuel Depot, eliminate the enemy General, rescue POWs, and destroy all four enemy ammunition vehicles before the convoy reaches its destination. The Communications Antenna is a strategic non-scoring target.
