We are a company from the 30th Infantry Division, consisting of 2 rifle platoons with 2 squads each. Our firepower is limited to small arms, but our cohesion and training make us effective in defensive operations. We are facing German forces defending the city of Mortain, supported by a Panzer division and Panzergrenadier light infantry with APCs. They have light mortar support and outnumber us roughly 3 to 1.

Our mission is to defend Hill 314 against the German counterattack until reinforcements arrive, capture key positions around Mortain to encircle the city, and take control of the train station south of Mortain to disrupt enemy supply lines. Additionally, we must secure the bridges providing southeast access to the city and hold the east riverbank to prevent enemy reinforcements and repel counterattacks.

The weather is clear and the terrain favors defensive positions, with hedgerows, trees, and slopes. Careful planning is necessary for offensive actions to avoid being caught in unfavorable positions. Around Hill 314, small villages and hamlets provide essential cover and staging points, while ridges and woods are contested by both sides. Our task is to hold key positions, protect our flanks, and maintain observation over enemy movements.

The Battle of Hill 314 took place in early August 1944 during the German counteroffensive at Mortain, known as Operation Lüttich. Hill 314 was a critical observation point controlling the main roads east of Mortain. U.S. forces combined infantry, light armor, and anti-tank teams to repel repeated German assaults. Control of the train station and surrounding ridges allowed Americans to disrupt enemy reinforcements, while securing villages and high ground ensured the defense of the area against repeated attacks.
