On February 7th, 1974, the island nation of Grenada gained independence from the United Kingdom, ending 185 years of colonial rule. However the transition into an independent state for them was far from simple, and ended up being an extremely bloody affair, with its first Prime Minister, Eric Gairy, ruling the island through fear and an iron fist, mainly through his personal paramilitary group known as “the Mongoose Gang”, who regularly engaged in acts of political violence against Gairy’s political opponents. However, in 1979, a Marxist coup overthrew Gairy, and installed the new Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop, who quickly garnered support from the Soviet Union, leading to massive amounts of equipment and economic aid being sent in support of his government, despite him officially being non-aligned. Due to this, he was seen as “too moderate”, and was soon executed in a coup, and was replaced by Bernard Coard, who lasted a grand total of 24 hours before stepping down due to a lack of support from the Soviets and Cuba. His replacement was Hudson Austin, a hardline communist who took control, and installed Marshal Law in an attempt to control the populace, this in turn also trapped hundreds of US students who were previously studying in Grenada, and cut off any communications for them to the rest of the world. It was also threatened that any student violating the curfew would be shot on sight, at which point, the US took notice. 

Due to Grenada’s location, it could easily threaten several of America's main sea routes, where 56% of its oil travelled through, and in the event of the Cold War gone hot, where about half of US reinforcements would need to travel through to get to Europe. Now that Grenada was officially aligned with the Soviet Union, that concern was deepened further, especially once Grenada began construction of a massive 10,000 foot long runway the US feared would be used to house long-range Soviet bombers, thus allowing the USSR to project power over the Caribbean. Soon after the construction began, US President Ronald Regan determined military action was needed, both to halt the construction, and to rescue the US students Hudson claimed were in “no danger”, as such, the nearby country of Barbados was chosen as the staging ground for the invasion. Vice Admiral Joseph Metcalf, and General Norman Schwarzkopf were put in charge of the invasion, which was the largest US military operation since the Vietnam war. 

On October 25th, 1983, 2 Companies of US Army Rangers paradropped onto the new airfield, officially starting the war, and within hours, thousands of US troops had already landed. The operation was relatively simple, however it was complicated by newly found shortcomings in US radio technology, leading to poor coordination between units. The war was also the debut for the new Blackhawk helicopter, however results were mixed due to poorly planned air assaults by Delta Force, leading to 4 of the 9 Blackhawks present being destroyed, and all damaged, as well as a pilot killed by anti-air fire. Regardless of how certain operations went, the overall objectives were achieved, with the US students being rescued with no casualties, as well as the total collapse of the Grenadan government. Hudson Austin was captured during the operation, and originally sentenced to death for the execution of Bishop, however this was commuted to a life sentence. The rest of his forces surrendered in droves, and the remaining coup leaders were rounded up as US forces swept the island. The operation was deemed a success by Regan on November 3rd, and US troops began the process of withdrawal soon after.
