Following a terrorist attack against the Nizhnevartovsk Oil Field in Russian Siberia that has put the site out of action for months, the Soviet Union is faced with a looming energy crisis, adding fuel to instability already rising throughout the nation. 

In order to prevent the situation degrading further, the Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union have devised a highly risky plan to solve the imminent energy crisis, an invasion of the Persian Gulf states to secure their vast oil fields, which will likely warrant intervention from NATO. However, the Politburo believe the NATO alliance to be a weakened state and through launching a surprise offensive against West Germany, it is believed by the hawks within the Politburo that scoring a quick victory against NATO will allow the USSR to secure a favourable deal over rights to Persian oil without the need for an invasion.

With its best units deployed to the West German front, Denmark is seen as a secondary theatre for the Soviet Union. The Polish People's Army has initiated its planned invasion of Denmark through the Zealand island with the support of the East German and Soviet navy. Polish forces having successfully secured a beachhead at Køge Bay and Fakse Bay, now advance towards the capital of Copenhagen.
