Iran, governed by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was a strategic ally of the United States in the region, receiving military and economic support in exchange for privileged access to Iranian oil. However, the Pahlavi’s government faced growing internal challenges, including popular protests and criticism from opposition groups accusing the regime of corruption, authoritarianism, and excessive alignment with the West.

Relations between the U.S. and Iran began to show cracks. Despite the formal alliance, Iran sought to assert its military sovereignty and demonstrate independence from American support. On the other hand, the U.S. was determined to maintain its strategic presence in the region, ensuring the protection of maritime routes in the Persian Gulf and control over energy resources.
In July 1978, tensions escalated due to military exercises conducted by Iran near areas controlled by the Americans. Reports indicated aggressive overflights by Iranian fighter jets near American airbases and maritime routes. In response, the U.S. command ordered air patrol missions to monitor and, if necessary, counter any threat.

The conflict also reflected the growing militarization of the region. The U.S. had introduced the F-15 Eagle, a superior air combat aircraft with advanced radar and weaponry systems. Meanwhile, Iran, equipped with F-14 Tomcats acquired from the U.S. in the 1960s, sought to show that its air force remained competitive.
The American F-15s had a technological advantage but faced the challenge of dealing with a greater number of enemy aircraft and potential ground ambushes. Iran was willing to test the U.S. response capability, using saturation tactics to destabilize aerial operations.
On July 15, a group of Iranian F-14s crossed into airspace near an American base, interpreted as a direct provocation.

In response, F-15 fighters were dispatched to intercept the Iranians.
Although the initial intention was de-escalate, the encounter quickly escalated. The combination of political tension, military pressure, and communication failures set the stage for an aerial confrontation.
This incident became a turning point in the deterioration of U.S.-Iran relations, foreshadowing indirect conflicts and geopolitical rivalries.

Main Objective:
- Engage hostile aircrafts in the especified area;
- Establish Air Superiority.
