When the Nazi German occupation of Norway ended in May 1945, there was a 'legal purge' of collaborators. Several thousand Norwegians and foreign citizens were tried and convicted for various acts that the occupying powers had sanctioned. The scope, legal basis, and fairness of these trials has since been a matter of some debate. The death penalty was reinstated and a total of 45 people were executed, including Vidkun Quisling, the Minister President of Norway during the occupation.
Both the Norwegian paramilitary forces within the kingdom (Milorg) and the Norwegian police forces that had been trained in Sweden, were well briefed and prepared ahead of the official liberation on 8 May 1945. The government viewed it as paramount to avoid lynching or other extrajudicial punishment. Though this was largely avoided, 28,750 individuals were arrested over the following few days. Most of these were released quickly, but by August 1946, between 5,000 and 6,000 were still detained.
It is the morning of the 2nd of May, 1945. Following the death of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler two days prior, German forces in Norway are yet to be handed an order of general surrender, however, morale is low and there is little cooperation between the various elements of the occupying German Military. The Norwegian Independent Battalion VII. under Oberstløytnant Niclas Baumann perform an excursion into occupied Norway with the intention of locating and arresting Nazi Collaborators.
