By mid‑July 1944, the American advance in Normandy had slowed to a brutal crawl. The bocage country south of Utah Beach created a natural fortress of thick hedgerows, sunken lanes, and isolated farm hamlets. Each field became a mini‑battle, and company‑level assaults were the backbone of the U.S. Army’s push toward Saint‑Lô. The 4th Infantry Division, fresh from the D‑Day landings, found itself grinding forward yard by yard, clearing strongpoints manned by elements of the German 353. Infanterie‑Division. La Croix — a tiny farm hamlet on a junction of sunken lanes — was exactly the kind of position the Germans turned into a delaying strongpoint to bleed the advance.
In this operation, U.S. forces will begin their approach from the south, moving through close bocage terrain without tank support. The task is to break into the first hedgerow line, locate and neutralize any concealed German AT positions, and open a safe corridor for armor to advance later. Scouts and rifle squads must work methodically, clearing field by field under the threat of MG42 fire and Panzerfaust ambushes. The static PaK guns used by German defensive companies were often hidden behind hedgerow gaps or farm entrances — finding them before they fire is crucial to the success of the advance.
Once the AT threat is eliminated, the rifle platoons will push directly onto La Croix. Expect a layered defense: MG42s covering the lanes, riflemen falling back between buildings, and a light mortar team providing harassment fire from behind the hamlet. Your task is to clear the settlement house‑to‑house, secure the crossroads, and prevent any retreating Germans from linking up with positions farther north. The capture of La Croix opens the battalion’s axis of advance toward Saint‑Lô.
After securing the hamlet, U.S. forces must hold La Croix against any counterattack. Establish defensive positions covering the northern and eastern approaches and prepare to repel any resurgence. Holding La Croix ensures the company can hand off a secure position to follow‑on forces and sustain the pressure toward Saint‑Lô.
