In 1992, a US military operation took place that marked one of the most intense confrontations between the United States and Iran, in a context of heightened geopolitical tensions. Named "Operation Desert Hitman," the mission was conducted by the U.S. armed forces with the objective of neutralizing an Iranian military complex strategically located approximately 50 kilometers south of Kerman military airbase. This complex, according to allied intelligence reports, was vital for the logistics of Iranian troops in the region, serving as a logistic center for the distribution of munitions and military supplies for the Iranian army.

The military complex was discovered through satellite imagery and reports from on-the-ground troops, revealing the existence of a sophisticated underground system that would be connected to other bases in the region. A main tunnel connected the base to several ammunition warehouses, linked by provisional tracks that branched out into other underground networks. These facilities enabled the continuous supply of Iranian forces stationed in Kerman, making the complex a high-priority target for U.S. forces.

Iranian resistance was fierce. Anti-air defense systems, such as ZSU-23 automatic cannons and SAM missiles, posed a significant threat to the U.S. aircraft. Ground troops also faced stiff resistance as they approached the complex, with Iranian ambushes and counterattacks complicating the advance.

The operation was launched during the afternoon of September 14th, and involved a combination of airstrikes and ground advances. Four F-16 Block 50 ground attack aircraft were assigned to destroy the complex’s anti-air defenses and weaken the underground infrastructure. Simultaneously, allied ground troops, supported by M1 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley transport vehicles, advanced towards the complex to secure control of the site. A squadron of F-15s was sent to a multirole mission that would involve repelling Iranian aerial threats.Iranian resistance was fierce.
