By this point in the conflict, early 1919, the forces of the Allied intervention in Northern Russia were now on the backfoot, the British and Canadian expeditionary units had been driven back from their positions around the village of Tulgas and the Americans had retreated from their positions within the town of Shenkursk against a numerically superior enemy. The Bolsheviks had seized this opportunity whilst they held the initiative against the Allies by launching an attack against the village of Bolshie Ozerki, which served as a vital link in the land route linking the port of Murmansk to the Obozerskaya rail station. With their main supply route severed, the Allied units holding the southern flank would be forced to retreat, securing a local Bolshevik victory. 

The Battle of Bolshie Ozerki was a several day long battle that took place from the 31st of March to the 2nd of April 1919, following a Bolshevik force seizing the village weeks prior. A mixed force of British, American, Polish and White Russian troops were involved in bitter fighting against several Red Army partisan regiments after the failure of the initial Allied attack to recapture the settlement. 

The attempts of the Red Army troops to flank and destroy the outnumbered Allied force over the following days were repeatedly repelled under withering rifle, machine gun and mortar fire, resulting in hundreds of casualties for the Reds, who were later ordered to withdraw.
