As a result of a crippling terrorist attack against the Nizhnevartovsk Oil Field in Russian Siberia, the USSR is faced with a looming fuel crisis on top of rising instability within the nation. The Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union have devised a plan, to secure and to then make use the vast oil fields of the Persian gulf, however, this action will almost definitely warrant a NATO response. The Politburo believe the NATO alliance to be a weakened state, and through launching a surprise offensive against West Germany it is believed by the hawks with the Politburo that scoring this victory against NATO will allow the USSR to secure a favourable deal over rights to Persian oil.

The town of Alfeld was of critical importance to both NATO and the Soviets, for NATO it was used to shuttle troops throughout the front via Bundesstraße 3, while for the Soviets the town held several crossing points for the river Leine which would allow Soviet forces an additional approach towards Hanover.

Alfeld switched hands several times earlier on in the war before a counterattack by German Landeswehr and American tanks secured the town in mid July, now, the Soviet 79th Guards Tank Division is attempting to storm the town again; troops of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Irish Rangers supported by tanks of C Squadron, 15th/19th The King’s Royal Hussars have been deployed to prevent this.

Day 42, 26th July 1987, Leinebergland Region, Federal Republic of Germany - With Warsaw Pact forces stalled, NATO forces attempt to land a decisive blow by launching a series of breakthrough attacks around the town of Alfeld.
