The Polish – Soviet War (February 1919 – March 1921) was an armed conflict between Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine against the Second Polish Republic and the Ukrainian People's Republic. It was for control of what is now Ukraine and part of Belarus.
A formal peace treaty, the Peace of Riga, was signed on 18 March 1921. It divided the land between Poland and Soviet Russia. Much of the land that was given to Poland became part of the Soviet Union after World War II.
Polish armored trains, along with tanks and armored cars were a part of the Polish armored force. In the 1920 war, such a train in cooperation with another armored unit would pose a significant threat on the battlefield and oftentimes decide the result of an engagement. Armored trains were not only used in combat roles, as their other tasks were reconnaissance, serving as mobile communications posts, casualties and supply transport, and what is more surprising - raiding actions behind enemy lines. There was no standard doctrine on the use of armored trains, and the tactics used by each train was decided by the train commander.
During the Polish - Bolshevik war, around 90 armored trains were made, many of them with short service, and throughout the entire war, Polish armored forces suffered 2056 casualties, more than 95% of which were armored train crews.
