The Battle of Collecchio, fought in late April 1945, marked one of the last major clashes in the Italian theatre as the Brazilian Expeditionary Force sought to eliminate Axis resistance in the region. Situated around the town of Collecchio, enemy units had ample time to prepare defensive positions, fortify buildings, and establish choke points along key routes leading east of the city. These entrenched positions would become the focal point of a determined and methodical Brazilian advance.

The Brazilians faced a layered defensive network of machine-gun nests, roadblocks, and prepared infantry positions. Progress required careful movement, reconnaissance, and coordinated attacks that often devolved into brutal close-quarters engagements. Fire support was crucial for dislodging defenders from key buildings and strongpoints, and every foothold gained tightened the noose around the Axis perimeter. The defenders fought stubbornly, but the relentless pressure exerted by the FEB gradually fractured their cohesion.

Italian partisans, emboldened by the nearing end of the war and aligned with the Allies, joined the fight alongside Brazilian troops. Their knowledge of the local terrain, ability to navigate bypass routes, and willingness to harass isolated Axis units proved invaluable. These resistance fighters helped disrupt supply lines, exposed hidden defensive positions, and sowed confusion among the enemy ranks, significantly accelerating the Allied advance.

As the battle progressed, the Brazilian forces isolated pockets of defenders and compelled numerous groups to surrender. By systematically eliminating each Axis stronghold, the FEB removed the last vestiges of organized resistance in the area. The fall of Collecchio underscored Brazil’s crucial role in the final phase of the Italian campaign and demonstrated how coordinated Allied action—including the contributions of local partisans—could overcome even well-prepared enemy defenses.
